?url_ver=Z39.88-2004&rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&rft.relation=http%3A%2F%2Fd-scholarship-dev.library.pitt.edu%2F8378%2F&rft.title=Experimental+testing+of+hollow+circular+section+bearing+capacity&rft.creator=Boyle%2C+Rebecca+Lynn&rft.description=More+and+more%2C+Overhead+Tri-Chord+Signing+Structures+are+being+used+in+the+United+States.+The+most+common+type+includes+a+circular+hollow+structural+section+loaded+through+a+strut+with+a+Tee-+shaped+cross-section.+This+poses+a+problem+in+that+the+sidewall+bearing+limit+state+for+this+particular+case+is+not+currently+treated+in+the+existing+design+specifications.+There+are%2C+however%2C+many+similar+cases+that+are+given+consideration+in+the+present+specifications.+However%2C+it+is+not+clear+that+these+provisions+are+portable+to+the+case+previously+described.+The+purpose+of+this+research+is+three-fold%3A+First+to+determine+the+capacity+of+a+particular+HSS-ST+connection+through+full-scale+experimental+testing+in+the+Watkins-Hagaart+Structural+Engineering+Laboratory+at+the+University+of+Pittsburgh%3B+second+to+evaluate+the+effectiveness+of+modifying+the+existing+specification+capacity+equations+for+similar+cases+to+fit+the+aforementioned+connection+geometry%3B+and+third%2C+to+use+the+results+to+validate+nonlinear+finite+element+modeling+techniques+being+performed+as+part+of+a+follow-up+research+program.+After+testing+is+performed+it+is+apparent+that+the+nominal+capacity+for+the+geometry+used+is+70+kips.+The+ultimate+capacity+is+96+kips%2C+while+the+yield+load+is+30+kips.+Certain+modifications+of+the+existing+specification's+capacity+equations+are+useful%2C+however%2C+should+be+used+with+the+proper+amount+of+care+and+engineering+judgment.&rft.date=2004-09-13&rft.type=University+of+Pittsburgh+ETD&rft.type=PeerReviewed&rft.format=application%2Fpdf&rft.language=en&rft.identifier=http%3A%2F%2Fd-scholarship-dev.library.pitt.edu%2F8378%2F1%2Fboylerl_etd2004.pdf&rft.identifier=++Boyle%2C+Rebecca+Lynn++(2004)+Experimental+testing+of+hollow+circular+section+bearing+capacity.++Master's+Thesis%2C+University+of+Pittsburgh.++++(Unpublished)++
