The prevalence of adult obesity-related health complications, until recently were only seen in adults, are arising within the youth population. The increasing rate of childhood obesity is of public health importance; if not properly dealt with now, the current generation of children will grow up and face serious health complications both in their late childhood and adult years. To address this epidemic, two approaches that can be utilized are school-based and clinical based interventions. Even though each type of intervention takes place in a different setting, the same basic principles of nutrition education, healthy eating and physical activity are addressed. While each of the two types of interventions has strengths and weaknesses, the overall goals of both school-based and clinic-based interventions are a reduction in weight and increase in the health of the children participating in the intervention. date: 2008-06-26 date_type: completed institution: University of Pittsburgh refereed: TRUE etdcommittee_type: committee_chair etdcommittee_type: committee_member etdcommittee_type: committee_member etdcommittee_name: Terry, Martha Ann etdcommittee_name: Butler, James etdcommittee_name: Grubs, Robin E etdcommittee_email: materry@pitt.edu etdcommittee_email: jbutler9@pitt.edu etdcommittee_email: rgrubs@pitt.edu etdcommittee_id: MATERRY etdcommittee_id: JBUTLER9 etdcommittee_id: RGRUBS etd_defense_date: 2008-04-03 etd_approval_date: 2008-06-26 etd_submission_date: 2008-04-06 etd_access_restriction: immediate etd_patent_pending: FALSE assigned_doi: doi:10.5195/pitt.etd.2011.6820 thesis_type: thesis degree: MPH committee: Martha Ann Terry, PhD (materry@pitt.edu) - Committee Chair committee: James Butler, H (jbutler9@pitt.edu) - Committee Member committee: Robin E.
