Reforming used hydrocarbons by closing the carbon cycle holds promise to achieve sustainability. The research plan described herein tackles this challenge by investigating the fundamental steps in growing carbon chains, to produce hydrocarbons, starting from carbon monoxide. The construction of the carbon-carbon bond is the most difficult step in this transformation. Here, inspired by work on copper surfaces, we develop homogeneous catalysts that mimic the surface active site, where we can investigate the overall transformation step-by-step. Success of this research plan will provide the guidelines to design more efficient catalysts and therefore, guide society towards sustainable fuel use.} }
