?url_ver=Z39.88-2004&rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&rft.relation=http%3A%2F%2Fd-scholarship-dev.library.pitt.edu%2F36084%2F&rft.title=Assessing+relational+cognitions+among+young+gay+and+bisexual+men+on+health+outcomes+of+HIV+and+mental+health&rft.creator=Sang%2C+Jordan&rft.description=Young+gay+and+bisexual+men+(YGBM)+face+multiple+health+disparities+compared+to+heterosexual+youth%2C+including+HIV+risk+and+poor+mental+health+outcomes.+Relational+cognitions+(relational+beliefs+and+expectations)+may+provide+nuanced+understanding+of+these+disparities%2C+but+have+not+been+fully+explored+among+YGBM.+In+our+first+analysis%2C+we+identified+six+subscales+on+relational+expectations+(restrictions%2C+masculine+and+gender+norms%2C+negative+breakups%2C+cheating%2C+optimism%2C+and+immediacy)+and+two+subscales+on+relational+beliefs+(sex+beliefs+and+equality).+In+our+second+analysis%2C+we+tested+these+subscales+on+outcomes+of+receptive+and+insertive+condomless+anal+sex+(R-CAS+and+I-CAS).+We+found+that+YGBM+with+greater+expectations+of+negative+breakups+were+negatively+associated+with+I-CAS+(AOR%3D0.91%3B+95%25+CI%3A+0.85%2C+0.97)+and+R-CAS+(AOR%3D0.92%3B+95%25+CI%3A+0.87%2C+0.97).+YGBM+with+greater+expectations+of+optimism+were+negatively+associated+with+R-CAS+(AOR%3D0.93%3B+95%25+CI%3A+0.88%2C+0.97)%2C+and+positively+associated+with+I-CAS+(AOR%3D1.22%3B+95%25+CI%3A+1.15%2C+1.30).+YGBM+with+greater+expectations+of+cheating+were+positively+associated+with+R-CAS+(AOR%3D1.20%3B+95%25+CI%3A+1.14%2C+1.26)+and+immediacy+was+negatively+associated+with+R-CAS+(AOR%3D0.92%3B+95%25+CI%3A+0.88%2C+0.97).+Among+relational+beliefs%2C+YGBM+with+greater+endorsement+of+sex+beliefs+had+a+negative+association+with+R-CAS+(AOR%3D0.81%3B+95%25+CI%3A+0.74%2C+0.89)%2C+and+beliefs+about+equality+(AOR%3D0.74%3B+95%25+CI%3A+0.67%2C+0.82)+were+negatively+associated+with+R-CAS.+In+our+third+analysis%2C+we+utilized+the+developed+subscales+from+paper+1+to+test+for+associations+to+outcomes+of+anxiety+and+depression.+We+found+that+YGBM+with+greater+relational+restrictions+(%CE%B2%3D+-.06)+had+a+negative+association+with+depression%2C+while+expectations+of+negative+break+ups+(%CE%B2%3D+.34)+and+optimism+(%CE%B2%3D+.05)+were+positively+associated+with+higher+depressive+scores.+Among+relational+beliefs%2C+beliefs+about+equality+(%CE%B2%3D+.06)+were+positively+associated+with+higher+depressive+scores.+For+anxiety%2C+expectations+of+restrictions+(%CE%B2%3D+-.17)+were+negatively+associated+with+higher+anxiety+scores.+Alternatively%2C+we+found+the+constructs+of+negative+break+ups+(%CE%B2%3D+.31)%2C+and+immediacy+(%CE%B2%3D+.06)+positively+associated+with+higher+anxiety+scores.+The+public+health+significance+of+these+analyses+illustrates+the+importance+of+relational+cognitions+on+health+and+well-being+among+YGBM.+We+support+future+interventions+that+focus+on+relational+cognitions+to+reduce+health+disparities.&rft.date=2019-06-27&rft.type=University+of+Pittsburgh+ETD&rft.type=PeerReviewed&rft.format=application%2Fpdf&rft.language=en&rft.identifier=http%3A%2F%2Fd-scholarship-dev.library.pitt.edu%2F36084%2F1%2FSang_Jordan_Dissertation_4_2019.pdf&rft.identifier=++Sang%2C+Jordan++(2019)+Assessing+relational+cognitions+among+young+gay+and+bisexual+men+on+health+outcomes+of+HIV+and+mental+health.++Doctoral+Dissertation%2C+University+of+Pittsburgh.++++(Unpublished)++
