?url_ver=Z39.88-2004&rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&rft.relation=http%3A%2F%2Fd-scholarship-dev.library.pitt.edu%2F33693%2F&rft.title=Ultrafast+structure+and+dynamics+of+ionic+liquids+revealed+by+two-dimensional+infrared+spectroscopy&rft.creator=Ren%2C+Zhe&rft.description=Two-dimensional+infrared+spectroscopy+(2D-IR)+is+a+non-linear+spectroscopy+that+is+capable+of+resolving+molecular+dynamics+with+picosecond+time+resolution+and+molecular-level+spatial+resolution.+2D-IR+has+been+successfully+implemented+in+a+myriad+of+solution+systems+to+study+the+local+solute+and+solvent+dynamics.+Ionic+liquids+are+a+unique+type+of+liquid+with+each+formula+unit+a+pair+of+cation+and+anion.+The+structure+grants+it+unique+properties+that+are+suitable+for+many+potential+applications%2C+and+the+chemical+structure+can+be+modified+to+be+%E2%80%9Ctask-specific%E2%80%9D.%0D%0A%0D%0AIn+this+thesis%2C+I+describe+our+implementation+of+2D-IR+to+understand+different+aspects+of+the+solvation+dynamics+of+ionic+liquids%2C+including+solvent+dynamics%2C+ultrafast+structures+and+dynamics+of+small+solutes%2C+and+the+dynamics+of+ionic+liquids+under+confinement.+A+direct+correlation+between+the+microscopic+solvent+dynamics+and+the+macroscopic+viscosity+has+been+observed%2C+indicating+the+molecular+origin+of+viscosity+in+ionic+liquids+is+possibly+the+ion-cage+lifetime.+Some+small+inorganic+salts+form+ion-pairs+in+the+ionic+liquids%2C+and+have+a+Gibbs+free+energy+of+~8+kJ%2Fmol.+Some+uncharged+small+molecules+can+cluster+in+ionic+liquids%2C+like+water+clusters+with+thiocyanate+anion.+The+detailed+structural+and+reorientation+dynamics+of+ionic+liquid-surfactant+complexes+imply+a+random+cluster+picture%2C+rather+than+previously-believed+reverse+micelle+picture%3B+the+shape+of+the+dynamic+correlation+function+also+indicates+a+non-isotropic+local+orientation+distribution+that+could+originate+from+the+ion-exchange+between+anionic+surfactants+and+ionic+liquids.&rft.date=2018-06-28&rft.type=University+of+Pittsburgh+ETD&rft.type=PeerReviewed&rft.format=application%2Fpdf&rft.language=en&rft.identifier=http%3A%2F%2Fd-scholarship-dev.library.pitt.edu%2F33693%2F7%2Fzhe_ren_etd.pdf&rft.identifier=++Ren%2C+Zhe++(2018)+Ultrafast+structure+and+dynamics+of+ionic+liquids+revealed+by+two-dimensional+infrared+spectroscopy.++Doctoral+Dissertation%2C+University+of+Pittsburgh.++++(Unpublished)++
