description: The objective of this research is to improve the safety margin and redundancy of current waterproofing details used for bridge substructures in PennDOT practice. Based on a literature review, inspection reports, and field visits, the key components of the waterproofing system are studied. Using software analysis and experimental tests, their strength and robustness is analyzed and evaluated based on the damage development and failure mode. The inadequacy in the key components of current waterproofing system is substantiated and remedies to mitigate water leakage are proposed. Executable recommendations are suggested to strengthen the waterproofing details at critical locations and to provide ease of construction and inspection.
