The extended, linear π conjugation along all the dendron branches, a feature absent in most dendrimers used for light harvesting, was expected to lead to an efficient light-harvesting system by acting as a dendritic molecular wire between peripheral donor chromophores and a core acceptor. To that end, nickel porphyrins were added to the periphery of the dendrons as preparation for inclusion in dye-sensitized solar cells. The prepared dendron-porphyrin conjugates proved to be poor dyes. This disappointing result is attributed to the use of nickel porphyrins which were found to undergo non-radiative decay, making them unsuitable for light-harvesting applications. Changes to the system are proposed, from replacing the nickel with zinc within the porphyrins to the use of alternative chromophores, to better test the dendrons function as molecular wires. date: 2013-10-18 date_type: published pages: 260 institution: University of Pittsburgh refereed: TRUE etdcommittee_type: committee_chair etdcommittee_type: committee_member etdcommittee_type: committee_member etdcommittee_type: committee_member etdcommittee_name: Chapman, Toby etdcommittee_name: Waldeck, David etdcommittee_name: Meyer, Tara etdcommittee_name: Lee, Jung-Kun etdcommittee_email: tchapman@pitt.edu etdcommittee_email: dave@pitt.edu etdcommittee_email: tmeyer@pitt.edu etdcommittee_email: jul37@pitt.edu etdcommittee_id: TCHAPMAN etdcommittee_id: DAVE etdcommittee_id: TMEYER etdcommittee_id: JUL37 etd_defense_date: 2013-05-03 etd_approval_date: 2013-10-18 etd_submission_date: 2013-10-18 etd_release_date: 2013-10-18 etd_access_restriction: immediate etd_patent_pending: FALSE thesis_type: dissertation degree: PhD citation: Bell, Peter (2013) SYNTHESIS OF p-PHENYLENE VINYLENE DENDRONS & THEIR FUNCTIONALIZATION AND TESTING IN DYE-SENSITIZED SOLAR CELLS.
