Interviewers collected risk factor data among 111 cases with recent HIV infection, and 333 HIV-negative controls from Chicago and Los Angeles. Compared with controls, cases had more unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) with both HIV-positive and HIV-negative partners. MSM with lower income or prior sexually transmitted infections (STI) were more likely to be recently HIV infected. Substances associated with UAI included amyl nitrate ("poppers"), methamphetamine, Viagra® (or similar PDE-5 inhibitors), ketamine, and gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB). Cases more frequently used Viagra®, poppers, and methamphetamine during UAI compared with controls. In multivariate analysis, income, UAI with HIV-positive partners, Viagra®, and poppers remained associated with recent HIV seroconversion. Better methods are needed to prevent HIV among MSM who engage in high-risk sex with concurrent drug use. © 2008 GovernmentEmployee: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. date: 2009-12-01 date_type: published publication: AIDS and Behavior volume: 13 number: 6 pagerange: 1084 - 1096 refereed: TRUE issn: 1090-7165 centers: cen_other_lgbthealth id_number: 10.1007/s10461-008-9403-3 pmid: 18498049 mesh_headings: Adult mesh_headings: Case-Control Studies mesh_headings: Central Nervous System Stimulants--adverse effects mesh_headings: Chicago--epidemiology mesh_headings: HIV Infections--epidemiology mesh_headings: HIV Infections--transmission mesh_headings: Homosexuality, Male--statistics & numerical data mesh_headings: Humans mesh_headings: Los Angeles--epidemiology mesh_headings: Male mesh_headings: Methamphetamine--adverse effects mesh_headings: Middle Aged mesh_headings: Piperazines--adverse effects mesh_headings: Purines--adverse effects mesh_headings: Questionnaires mesh_headings: Risk Factors mesh_headings: Risk-Taking mesh_headings: Socioeconomic Factors mesh_headings: Substance-Related Disorders--epidemiology mesh_headings: Sulfones--adverse effects mesh_headings: Vasodilator Agents--adverse effects chemical_names: Central Nervous System Stimulants chemical_names: Piperazines chemical_names: Purines chemical_names: Sulfones chemical_names: Vasodilator Agents chemical_names: sildenafil chemical_names: Methamphetamine citation: Carey, JW and Mejia, R and Bingham, T and Ciesielski, C and Gelaude, D and Herbst, JH and Sinunu, M and Sey, E and Prachand, N and Jenkins, RA and Stall, R (2009) Drug use, high-risk sex behaviors, and increased risk for recent HIV infection among men who have sex with men in Chicago and Los Angeles.
