?url_ver=Z39.88-2004&rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&rft.relation=http%3A%2F%2Fd-scholarship-dev.library.pitt.edu%2F17783%2F&rft.title=A+dynamic+life+cycle+assessment+framework+for+whole+buildings+including+indoor+environmental+quality+impacts&rft.creator=Collinge%2C+William+O.&rft.description=Life+cycle+assessment+(LCA)+can+aid+in+quantifying+the+environmental+impacts+of+whole+buildings+by+evaluating+materials%2C+construction%2C+operation+and+end+of+life+phases+with+the+goal+of+identifying+areas+of+potential+improvement.+Since+buildings+have+long+useful+lifetimes%2C+and+the+use+phase+can+have+large+environmental+impacts%2C+variations+within+the+use+phase+can+sometimes+be+greater+than+the+total+impacts+of+other+phases.+Additionally%2C+buildings+are+operated+within+changing+industrial+and+environmental+systems%3B+the+simultaneous+evaluation+of+these+dynamic+systems+is+recognized+as+a+need+in+LCA.+At+the+whole+building+level%2C+LCA+of+buildings+has+also+failed+to+account+for+internal+impacts+due+to+indoor+environmental+quality+(IEQ).+The+two+key+contributions+of+this+work+are+1)+the+development+of+an+explicit+framework+for+DLCA+and+2)+the+inclusion+of+IEQ+impacts+related+to+both+occupant+health+and+productivity.+DLCA+was+defined+as+%E2%80%9Can+approach+to+LCA+which+explicitly+incorporates+dynamic+process+modeling+in+the+context+of+temporal+and+spatial+variations+in+the+surrounding+industrial+and+environmental+systems.%E2%80%9D+IEQ+impacts+were+separated+into+three+types%3A+1)+chemical+impacts%2C+2)+nonchemical+health+impacts%2C+and+3)+productivity+impacts.+Dynamic+feedback+loops+were+incorporated+in+a+combined+energy%2FIEQ+model%2C+which+was+applied+to+an+illustrative+case+study+of+the+Mascaro+Center+for+Sustainable+Innovation+(MCSI)+building+at+the+University+of+Pittsburgh.+Data+were+collected+by+a+system+of+energy%2C+temperature%2C+airflow+and+air+quality+sensors%2C+and+supplemented+with+a+post-occupancy+building+survey+to+elicit+occupants%E2%80%99+qualitative+evaluation+of+IEQ+and+its+impact+on+productivity.+The+IEQ%2BDLCA+model+was+used+to+evaluate+the+tradeoffs+or+co-benefits+of+energy-savings+scenarios.+Accounting+for+dynamic+variation+changed+the+overall+results+in+several+LCIA+categories+-+increasing+nonrenewable+energy+use+by+15%25+but+reducing+impacts+due+to+criteria+air+pollutants+by+over+50%25.+Internal+respiratory+effects+due+to+particulate+matter+were+up+to+10%25+of+external+impacts%2C+and+internal+cancer+impacts+from+VOC+inhalation+were+several+times+to+almost+an+order+of+magnitude+greater+than+external+cancer+impacts.+An+analysis+of+potential+energy+saving+scenarios+highlighted+tradeoffs+between+internal+and+external+impacts%2C+with+some+energy+savings+coming+at+a+cost+of+negative+impacts+on+either+internal+health%2C+productivity+or+both.+Findings+support+including+both+internal+and+external+impacts+in+green+building+standards%2C+and+demonstrate+an+improved+quantitative+LCA+method+for+the+comparative+evaluation+of+building+designs.&rft.date=2013-06-28&rft.type=University+of+Pittsburgh+ETD&rft.type=PeerReviewed&rft.format=application%2Fpdf&rft.language=en&rft.identifier=http%3A%2F%2Fd-scholarship-dev.library.pitt.edu%2F17783%2F1%2FCollinge_ETD_4-10-13.pdf&rft.identifier=++Collinge%2C+William+O.++(2013)+A+dynamic+life+cycle+assessment+framework+for+whole+buildings+including+indoor+environmental+quality+impacts.++Doctoral+Dissertation%2C+University+of+Pittsburgh.++++(Unpublished)++
