A multivariate analysis based on experimental measurements supplemented by ab initio calculations provides a detailed description of the low energy regions of the potential energy surface (PES) in both the ground and excited states. Our findings lead to interesting insights into the interactive forces shaping the contours of the PES and the dynamics of interconversion pathways. A novel perspective centered on the electron distribution is presented to address the issue of the correlation of shape and functionality. date: 2006-03-30 date_type: completed institution: University of Pittsburgh refereed: TRUE etdcommittee_type: committee_chair etdcommittee_type: committee_member etdcommittee_type: committee_member etdcommittee_type: committee_member etdcommittee_name: Pratt, David W etdcommittee_name: Petek, Hrvoje etdcommittee_name: Grabowski, Joseph etdcommittee_name: Saxena, Sunil etdcommittee_email: pratt@pitt.edu etdcommittee_email: petek@pitt.edu etdcommittee_email: joeg@pitt.edu etdcommittee_email: sksaxena@pitt.edu etdcommittee_id: PRATT etdcommittee_id: PETEK etdcommittee_id: JOEG etdcommittee_id: SKSAXENA etd_defense_date: 2005-11-16 etd_approval_date: 2006-03-30 etd_submission_date: 2005-12-07 etd_access_restriction: immediate etd_patent_pending: FALSE assigned_doi: doi:10.5195/pitt.etd.2011.10128 thesis_type: dissertation degree: PhD committee: David W.
