Abstract

Migrant Mexicans are a particularly vulnerable population of the Hispanic/Latino community, as many of them are undocumented with no legal status in the United States. While they remain largely invisible to the people for which they plant, cultivate and harvest produce, they face tremendous risk for poor health outcomes. Especially in regards to oral health, there are significant socioeconomic and racial disparities, which leaves their dental needs considerably unmet. Boca Sana, Cuerpo Sano aims to 1) Improve oral health literacy and 2) reduce barriers to dental care access for migrant Mexican families in North San Diego County, California by using a community-based participatory research approach. Culturally appropriate educational materials were developed and lay community health workers were recruited and trained to provide oral health education. Process and outcome measures were examined to understand program effectiveness and fidelity in achieving intended goals. Evaluation measures indicated that participants experienced a significant increase in oral health knowledge but did not have particularly notable improvements in attitudes and behaviors. The sample size used for this evaluation does not include all Boca Sana, Cuerpo Sana participants, due to time constraints in obtaining post-surveys. As this program expands, it holds great potential to make a significant public health impact for migrant Mexican families in the United States through oral health education and support.
